CBD Treatment Options for PTSD

PTSD is a condition brought on by a traumatic life event. It can last for a limited time or, in some cases, develop into a long-term, chronic condition.

So how can CBD help with your PTSD symptoms?

The recent findings from this medical journal give the best place to start explaining how to use CBD to treat and alleviate a lifestyle managing PTSD.

“At some point in their lives, approximately 10% of people will be affected by PTSD, resulting in an enormous economic and social impact. This impact is aggravated by the scarcity of psychological and, above all, pharmacological approaches to PTSD treatment (Hidalgo and Davidson, 2000; Yule, 2001; Jurkus et al., 2016). At present, approved treatments for PTSD involve anxiolytics and antidepressants, which are inefficient and have considerable side effects (Berger et al., 2009; Shin et al., 2014; Bernardy and Friedman, 2015).

The eCB system can provide more efficient and better tolerated alternatives to the standard treatments for PTSD. The eCB system plays an important role in the regulation of emotional behavior and is essential for synaptic processes that determine learning and emotional responses, especially those related to potentially traumatic experiences (Castillo et al., 2012; Riebe et al., 2012). Among the possible alternative approaches, the use of components from Cannabis sativa such as CBD is particularly promising. Recent reviews have reported promising results of CBD treatment of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including PTSD (Mechoulam, 2005; Izzo et al., 2009; Passie et al., 2012). What began as a possibility discovered in a study of an animal model of aversive conditioning (Bitencourt et al., 2008) gained strength through results obtained in humans (Das et al., 2013) (see Figure Figure11 for a brief history of CBD in PTSD). Because the compound has been proved to be well tolerated by humans, both in overall safety and possible side effects (Bergamaschi et al., 2011), CBD is now considered a new therapeutic possibility for treating PTSD. “

As the excerpt above states, there are key proponents of PTSD and its effects psychologically that are not addressed properly through traditional pharmaceuticals. Prescribed medications do little to give PTSD patients adequate relief without the unnecessary side effects of traditional anxiety and antidepressant medications.

The “eCB” system referenced above is the endocannabinoid system. If you aren’t familiar with the endocannabinoid system click here to be taken to a blog post we wrote telling you all about it!

The endocannabinoid system delivers CBD relief to the specific nerve centers and hormonal systems PTSD patients need. The eCB is known for regulating our inner levels and it delivers directly to the specific area the body needs.

However, because of the processing and synthetic nature of prescribed medications, our eCB system is not able to carry and deliver them efficiently. The pharmaceutical world relies on bloodstream circulation to carry the medication throughout our body, in turn, this dilutes the medicine's effectiveness in the areas we need it most. Unless you take higher dosages of the prescribed medication it may seem to be less effective in treating your PTSD symptoms.

And as the above excerpt mentions, most pharmaceutical medications aren’t able to treat psychological symptoms effectively. Their best treatment options disrupt our hormonal patterns in an attempt to regulate our body's systems externally with medication.

While this can be the best option for some, it may be more intrusive and less helpful for others.

That’s where CBD comes in! CBD is derived from a natural source that is easier for our eCB system to grab hold of and deliver to the source of PTSD symptoms!
