Wait What is CBD?
CBD or cannabidiol is a natural occurring non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid found within the Cannabis Sativa plant. It is a natural anti-inflammatory agent with a multitude of benefits including as a remedy for joint pain, anxiety, insomnia and more recently as a therapeutic agent in treatment of acne vulgaris and other skin conditions.
Why is CBD a Promising Therapeutic Agent for the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris?
Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease involving the pilosebaceous unit. Its pathophysiology is multifactorial and complex but includes obstruction of the pilosebaceous unit due to increased sebum production, abnormal keratinization, proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes and inflammation. This is where CBD comes into play. Because of its sebostatic and more importantly, its anti-inflammatory properties, it seems a logical choice in the treatment of acne vulgaris. In fact, many popular skincare brands are even incorporating CBD into their product line.
Although more research needs to be conducted, a 2016 study looked into cannabinoids and their potential benefits in the treatment of acne. It concluded that all phytocannabinoids exert anti-inflammatory actions, thus stating it to be a potential efficient, yet safe tool in the management of skin inflammation. More recently, a 2019 study referenced the approval of sarecycline as the first new chemical entity approved for acne in several years forecasting it might be followed by other new actives such as cannabidiol (CBD) in the near future.
We live in a generation where Botox and fillers are all the rave. Makes sense because who doesn’t want to turn back time and look more youthful? However, everyone knows, the first step in preventing fine lines, wrinkles and aging is sunscreen and a good skincare routine. Once again, this is where CBD comes into play.
CBD is packed with antioxidants, which helps, correct, delay and prevent signs of aging. In fact, even a scientific study conducted back in 1998 indicated cannabidiol (CBD) to be a potent antioxidant. Additionally, an article speaking on antioxidants in skincare published by Dermstore stated, antioxidants protect the skin by limiting free radical production, which can damage the skin. With daily use, they can reduce lentigines (sun spots), calm skin inflammation and revitalize dull-looking skin through hydration and by increasing moisture retention.
