CBD and Seizures

CBD and Seizures

This is an easy CBD post!

Why? Because CBD has been PROVEN to help with treating seizures!

So, this blog post is dedicated to all the research and medical options for CBD and how it helps treat seizures.

The prescription level CBD is called Epidolex. Epidolex is only prescribed for severe cases of patients dealing with epilepsy, the two main conditions being Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndrome. Both of these conditions are best explained in these excerpts from the FDA:

"Lennox-Gastaut syndrome begins in childhood. It is characterized by multiple types of seizures. People with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome begin having frequent seizures in early childhood, usually between ages 3 and 5. More than three-quarters of affected individuals have tonic seizures, which cause the muscles to contract uncontrollably. Almost all children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome develop learning problems and intellectual disabilities. Many also have delayed development of motor skills such as sitting and crawling. Most people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome require help with the usual activities of daily living.

Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic condition that appears during the first year of life with frequent fever-related seizures (febrile seizures). Later, other types of seizures typically arise, including myoclonic seizures (involuntary muscle spasms). Additionally, status epilepticus, a potentially life-threatening state of continuous seizure activity requiring emergency medical care, may occur. Children with Dravet syndrome typically experience poor development of language and motor skills, hyperactivity, and difficulty relating to others."

The full article from the FDA talks about the extensive trial and testing parameters to determine the effectiveness of CBD for patients living with one of the most debilitating forms of epilepsy and found it to be an effective treatment option!

Side effects were what you would expect from someone using a CBD product with increased appetite and/or thirst, lethargy, and sleepiness as the most common. When used for extended periods of time there were reports of increased enzymes in the liver.

So, what if you aren’t being prescribed Epidiolex because you aren’t diagnosed with one of the above conditions? Not to worry because there have been further studies and reports explaining the benefits of CBD for patients dealing with less severe seizures.

This article references the use of CBD Tincture oil to begin your treatment plan. The key to an effective seizure management plan is to expect a gradual decrease in monthly episodes and begin increasing your dosage slowly but surely over time. You will eventually find the perfect dosage for your seizure rhythm. CBD Tincture oil will not stop your seizures but it is effective in reducing the number of episodes your condition considers normal.

Patients who are prescribed Epidiolex begin with a dosage of 2.5 mg. But it’s important to be aware that many patients increase their dosage and are closely monitored by their physician until they find their perfect dosage. If your seizures are already being monitored by a doctor be sure to include them in your CBD plan. They may be able to help you understand the dosage needed based on your condition.
